Nose Surgery

A consultation always takes place before surgery. It includes a full description of the treatment and mentions the potential complications as well as answering individual/personal questions.
This description is necessary in order to be prepared for the personal meeting and to be informed about the most important points.

Reason of medical intervention

The nose is a characteristic feature-forming organ of the face, it influences our satisfaction. The nose is essential necessary in our life, so its correction may positively or negatively modify harmony of the face and help good function.

The shape of the nose may be determined by genetics and other factors like an accident, but fortunately in both cases it can be corrected with surgical intervention. In most cases, the change/alteration is coupled with deviation of nasal septum. This problem causes hard nasal breathing and surgery can be the solution.

The Operation

The surgical method depends on the degree of alteration. Usually it’s enough to make some incisions inside the nose, but sometimes incisions need to be hidden on the surface of the nose or face to reach the best result.

In some cases, there is a need to remove nasal bones or fill cartilage implants.

For the best result and also for the patient's safety an ENT specialist is working with us during the operation, which usually takes 2-3 hours under general anesthetic.

Before surgery

An examination by an ear, nose, and throat specialist is necessary before surgery.

Prior to using anaestesia, the following medical examinations are necessary: EKG, chest X-ray, laboratory test. On the day of surgery, the patient has to stay one night in the hospital.

Therapy after Operation, Medicines, Lifestyle, Monitoring

After the operation, we put a fixing bandage over the nose for 5-10 days. We put a tampon inside the nose to avoid bleeding. It makes nasal breathing impossible. The tampon is removed within 24 hours.

It’s a normal reaction that directly after operation, there will be swelling and hematoma around the nose and eyes.

The patient must not blow his/her nose or do physical work, drink alcohol, smoke or be in a hot, dusty environment. Usually for 1 week phlegm will be excreted. After the operation one is offered to use nasal ointment and oil.

General and Special Risks of Operation, Possible Complications

We’ll inform you about all risks of anaesthesia during your personal consultation. In order to reduce surgical complications, we give antibiotic medicine and an injection (LMWH) before every operation to prevent thrombus during anaesthesia.

Most frequent complications of the operation:

• temporary numbness of upper lips and around the nose
• difficult breathing (because of scarring)
• bleeding
• damage to tear duct which causes permanent lacrimation
• injury of the skullbase may cause liquor appearance or meningitis
• lasting discoloration of the nose skin or around the eyes 
• inflammation, suppuration which may be irreversible damage (necessitates new operation)
• visible scares can remain
• sensitive surgical area
• possible necrobiosis of a small part of the skin which can cause nosebleeds, noises during breathing

A more refined result of the operation is seen after 4-6 weeks but the final shape from  half a year to 12 months. Sometimes the nasal breathing cannot be perfectly improved in each case (allergy) the scars might cause smaller changes.
